HOW TO RECEIVE THE HOLY GHOST

There is no mechanical procedure involved in receiving the Holy Spirit (Holy Ghost and Holy Spirit have exactly the same meaning). It is a gift from God given to an openhearted and spiritually hungry believer.  It is not necessary to have a deep theological understanding of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit to receive it.  The Gentiles of Caesarea had almost no understanding of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit in order to receive it.  This writing is for the expressed purpose of making the process of receiving the Baptism a reality in the life of each person who desires to receive it.  REMEMBER:  The Baptism of the Holy Ghost is not designed to save you, but is given to believers who ask for it, because you are saved.  Make sure you have received the Lord Jesus in your life before beginning the following process (Click here if you need to be saved first): WHAT IT MEANS TO BE SAVED?

The process

  1. SURRENDER:  Yield your whole heart to God.  Desire to live holy and righteously and to forsake all sin.  Surrender your guilt of all past sin.  Do not try to hide any un-repented sin.  Do not practice sin and expect to receive.  It is certainly a gift of God (Acts 8:20).

  2. ASK GOD:  The gift of the Holy Spirit is given to believers who ask for it.  You have not because you ask not. As you ask, believe that God desires to fill you and will do so.  Ask and keep asking regularly until you receive it. Do not seek tongues or an experience, but seek God and be willing to speak in other tongues.

  3. Do not try to manipulate God or copy a mechanical technique; simply worship God and offer your all to Him.

  4. Do not attempt to work up emotion or to suppress emotion.  Yielding is a passive surrender to the will of another.  Many Christians receive the Holy Ghost after they quit trying to receive by their own efforts.  Surrender and faith are the keys to receiving, not a technique or duty.

  5. Open your heart in adoration to Jesus.  Trust Him.  Desire to be entirely possessed by Him.  Expect to receive the Promise of the Father.

  6. Realize that you do not have to seek or pray for a certain period of time to be eligible to receive.  However, also realize that you cannot force God to give you the Holy Spirit just by truing to talk gibberish.  God’s part is to fill us, and our part is to ask.  Jesus told us to keep asking, keep seeking and keep knocking, This is not begging God, but demonstrating your faith in God.   It will take as long as it takes for you to be filled.  Remember:  It is never a waste of time to spend time in prayer.

  7. Realize that yielding yourself totally to God includes yielding your tongue.  Some Christians do not receive as early as they could because when the Spirit starts to give forth unknown words, they resist be insisting to continue speaking in their familiar native language. Acts 2:4b “. and they began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance (something to say)”.

  8. When you feel the Spirit of God strongly upon you and unfamiliar words start coming into your mind, speak them out loud.  If you have just been filled and this is your prayer language welling up from within, it will be obvious to you and those around you.  If it turns out to be just your own eagerness and not really the Holy Spirit, there will have been no harm done.

  9. Recognize that you will speak in tongues, but the Holy Spirit will supply the utterance.  Many have had difficulty yielding their speech to God because they have assumed that the Holy Spirit will force the tongue to change languages.  The truth is that you will do the speaking, but without having to think of what to say.  The Holy Spirit will fill your mouth as you exert the faith to speak.  You will voluntarily use your own lungs, mouth and vocal cords.  The Holy Spirit will only supply the utterance and the anointing.

  10. Do not worry about how much emotion you feel in comparison with someone else.  The emotions a person feels when receiving the Holy Ghost will vary widely, depending on his or her emotional make-up, the depth of one’s dedication, the earnestness of one’s seeking, the intensity of one’s desire for the gift and other factors.  The same is true with the experience of salvation - - - not everyone displays the same amount of emotion.

  11. Realize that this Promise of the Father is for you!  Do not become discouraged if you do not receive right away.  God knows when you are ready to receive. Remember also that time spent with God, deepening your dedication, and waiting on Him to cleanse your heart is time well spent.

 SAMPLE PRAYER

   Heavenly Father,

I want to thank you for the gift of salvation.  I am glad that I am saved and Jesus is the Lord of my life.  But Father, I want every gift you have for me.  I want your gift of the Holy Ghost.  I need His power in my life!  Jesus, I ask you to baptize me in the Holy Ghost.  I receive this gift by faith!  Right Now, Father I raise my hands in praise to you.  I open my mouth wide and I will begin to praise you, but not in any language I know.  Just like on the day of Pentecost, I am going to begin to speak as the Holy Ghost gives me something to say.  As I do, I thank you Father that the Holy Spirit is going to give me the ability to do so!  Halleluiah!
