History of Victory Temple
Church of God in
Christ
As told by Mother
Buckner, the only living member of the original church – August 1990 –
Mrs. Melo Alexander, writer.
In the
spring of the year 1930, Elder E. L. Thompson came to Oklahoma City
from Wetumka, Oklahoma and started a prayer revival service in an
abandoned pool hall on the southeast corner of Sixth & Jordon street.
He brought two God-fearing, spirited-filled women to help conduct the
services. One played a guitar and the other the piano. When it rain,
the women place pots under the leaks where they slept upstairs.
Though it
all, God blessed and many were saved and filled with the Holy Ghost.
People came in off the streets and gave their lives to God. Among
those Sister A. Lewis, aunt of Mother Leola Buckner, stopped by and
received Christ. Later that same year, I, Mother Buckner, went to the
altar and gave my life to God. I was 16 years old. The two women
stayed until enough people were saved to carry o the church services,
but there was not on to play the piano. I would go and sit at the
piano and the Lord gave it into my spirit to play songs. If they sang
in certain keys, I would play. Elder Thompson prophesied that I was to
be the pianist. The church kept growing, and my aunt was the first
church mother. Elder Thompson named the church “Fairground”.
Other
church mothers after Mother Lewis were Mother Drake, the mother of the
late Mother Lang; Mother Jones, Mother Shanks, the mother of State
Supervisor, Thelma Brown; and Mother Goldie Harris.
We were
not in the pool hall very long before Elder Thompson built another
building in the rear of the pool hall and the corner was cleared off.
Elder Thompson dedicated the whole corner to always be the church
property.
Elder Coy
Brown came to our church and was appointed our Assistant Pastor. Later
on the state was divided and Elder Thompson became our first Bishop of
Southeast Oklahoma. After his death, Bishop Brown became the second
Bishop—also our Pastor. He was the Bishop for over three years until
November, 1960. Under his tenure, the “Fairground Church” was renamed
the “Sixth & Jordan Street Church of God in Christ”. Bishop W.E.
Jefferies then became the third Bishop, and our Pastor, and a
beautiful fellowship hall was built.
After his
passing of Bishop Jeffries, Dr. Malcolm Coby was appointed our Pastor
December 8, 1987 by Senior Bishop J. O. Patterson. Since then major
improvements have been made. The church was renamed “Victory Temple
Church of God in Christ”, the fellowship hall was named and dedicated
as “W.E. Jefferies Fellowship Hall”. The entire church structure has
been completely renovated within and without. Other properties have
been obtained, growth in membership as well as in various ministries
in the church. We are thankful to God-give leadership.
